HOURS LATER, Iviana awoke to find herself alone in her tent. The sun shown brightly outside, but it did nothing to cheer her. She was utterly worn and raw and could find no reason to move from her bed. Recalling the way she had treated her friends when she entered the camp that morning, she was ashamed of her behavior, but had no desire to offer any explanation of what had happened. She wanted to be alone and knew they would have no better understanding of the occurrence than she. If anything, they would probably assume she had dreamt it, but she knew very well it had not been a dream. It had been only too real for her.

Iviana remained in this attitude for days while her friends awaited direction. She would not speak to anyone—not even the one she had allowed to comfort her. They wondered whether she willfully refused to speak or had simply lost her voice entirely. All they knew was that Iviana was not herself.

One evening while Iviana lay in the tent, she heard the others whispering outside.

“She’s been like this for days,” Nimua said. “We can’t just leave her like this.”

“She’s tired—perhaps ill,” said Marquen, considering. “If you’re thinking of getting her back to the Greater Archipelagos, I don’t know if she has the strength for such a trip.”

“I agree,” Darist added thoughtfully. “Whatever happened, she needs time to heal.”

“Well, we can’t just wait around for something to happen. We need to do something,” said Nimua.

“I think I may have a solution,” offered Flynn. “My sister married a man who owns an estate not far from here. If we can find a way to get her there, she may rest there as long as she likes. I would not at all mind seeing my sister again, either.”

“That’s perfect,” Darist answered, obviously relieved.

“Indeed, it is!” Nimua replied happily. “I think it might do her good and then we can all meet this sister of yours.”

“That settles it,” said Marquen. “We leave as soon as possible. Tomorrow?”

As the rest offered their agreement, their voices faded as they moved to another area of the camp until Iviana could no longer hear what was said. Her face red with shame, she regretted the situation she had created, yet she did not feel ready to seek, even if that was an option. She was not ready for anything and, try as she might, she could not get herself out of this mindset. Nevertheless, she was determined to try.

The next day, Iviana forced herself out of the tent as soon as she had changed. She was surprised at how weary she felt and was so dizzy she fell against the tent. She caught hold of one of the tent-pegs until she was steady.

“Ivi!” Flynn exclaimed. “What are you doing up? You look utterly white in the face, my friend.”

Iviana put on as lively a face as she could manage. “I’m feeling much better, Flynn. I think we might continue our journey today.
